Classics of Medical Ethics:
“Principlism and Its Alleged Competitors”

Monday Oct 28 | 5.00-6.30pm | Anlyan Center N203 (300 Cedar Street)

In The Principles of Biomedical Ethics (first published in 1979 and now in its 8th edition) James Childress and Tom Beauchamp developed a “principlist” approach to medical ethics that has become the dominant framework for approaching topics in medical ethics, while also making it a prime target for criticism from rival approaches. In “Principlism and Its Alleged Competitors” Beauchamp replies to his critics and aims to show that the differences between principlism and its rivals has been greatly exaggerated.

Organized in collaboration with the Program for Biomedical Ethics. This reading group is open to medical students at Yale School of Medicine. The discussion will be led by Peter Wicks (Scholar-in-Residence, Elm Institute) and Jane Abbottsmith (Yale MD/PhD program).

Our clinical practice is steered by ethical principles. They guide the decisions we make in our clinics and ward rounds; what we tell our patients, and what we omit to tell them; the research we do.
